Problem Space

Approximately 4% of American adults over the age of 18 grapple with ADHD-related concentration issues, emphasizing the importance of early intervention for these neurodevelopmental symptoms.

ADHD can significantly impact peer interactions, potentially leading to social isolation, particularly when individuals affected struggle with knowing how to interact and experience the urge to overlap in conversations.

Proposed Solution

Our strategy incorporates fictional social interactive games and progress tracking to empower children with ADHD, fostering holistic development, improving cognitive skills, and facilitating emotion management.

We tested multiple interface implementations, starting with an interactive SMS game, progressing to an automated chatbot, and culminating in the development of the final version as an iPad app.

Wizard Of Oz

We crafted a non-linear script for our social scenario game [for this instance a birthday party scenario], ensuring that the storyline adjusts to user choices, leading to varied outcomes.

To assess the concept, we utilized a paper prototype and conducted a Wizard of Oz experiment [SMS interactions] with 4 individuals, with my teammate and I alternating between the roles of wizard and note-taker.

FEEDBACK

The game texts lacked vibrancy and excitement, indicating a need for increased fun elements.

Moreover, their length proved overwhelming, particularly for players with attention deficits, necessitating concise and engaging content.

WhatsApp Chatbot

We converted our paper prototype into a Landbot-powered WhatsApp chatbot, incorporating emojis, gifs, and simplified language to enhance engagement.

We strategically also integrated open-ended questions to prompt user reflection, fostering cognitive engagement and self-awareness within the interactive experience.

FEEDBACK

Users recommended making texts more concise for better readability and adjusting language to foster encouragement rather than sounding preachy.

They also suggested adding a prompt to inquire whether users want to continue or end the game if the chat is left unattended.

ONBOARDING

HOMEPAGE

Upon downloading the app, parents undergo a personalized onboarding process to enhance their child's experience, including completing a questionnaire to gather insights into the child's needs and preferences.

The app homepage is a dynamic hub with a banner carousel for exploring game stories and tips, featuring compelling calls-to-action, sections for trending and latest releases, and a bottom menu for navigation.

Future Scope

The future scope includes introducing more audio interactions, diversifying social scenarios, and implementing multiplayer gameplay for parent-child interaction.

Additionally, the plan involves offering diverse voiceover choices, exploring augmented reality, and expanding its gamification system.

What I Learnt

Understanding users' learning capacity and preferred language was paramount, informing our approach and ensuring it resonated effectively.

Multiple feedback sessions proved invaluable in refining our final output, enabling us to meticulously define and enhance the overall user experience.

INTERACTIONS DURING GAMEPLAY

GAME LIBRARY

During gameplay, users utilize various methods such as default voiceovers to bypass on-screen texts, pivotal decision-making moments shaping the narrative, audio input for sharing thoughts, and prompted journaling for reflection on decisions and potential outcomes, enhancing the overall experience.

The Games page is the app's primary entry, providing quick access to engaging content for young users, while the Library offers a central repository for all available storylines, allowing easy exploration and tracking of completed stories, distinguished by green tags on completed story tiles.

UNLOCKING NEW LEVELS

JOURNAL & PARENT PORTAL

Upon selecting a story, users are directed to a screen revealing the total number of chapters. The narrative unfolds sequentially and subsequent chapters remain locked until the user completes the preceding ones.

Attempting to unlock locked chapters prompts users to complete earlier segments first, ensuring a cohesive storytelling experience and preserving narrative build-up.

The Parent Portal provides a comprehensive space for parents, with visual representations of skill development & progress reports, screen time tracking, and pro tips.

It also provides a visually engaging calendar layout for quick insights into the child's emotional experiences during gameplay, providing a holistic view of their engagement and growth within the app.

MONETIZATION

PROFILE & GAMIFICATION

The app utilizes a user-friendly monetization approach, offering detailed information about story game titles and facilitating purchases exclusively through Apple Pay for swift and secure checkout, with parental involvement required due to the use of Touch or Face ID.

The profile page showcases the user's profile picture, along with information like completed and ongoing story chapters, visual cues for unlocking the next title, and access to earned titles, serving as a gamification strategy to maintain user motivation.
